Close-up of bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) growing amongst last year's Christmas fern (Polystichum acrostichoides) in floodplain forest along the banks of the Potomac River, Turkey Run Park, George Washington Memorial Parkway, Virginia. Bloodroot extract is toxic to animal cells and applying bloodroot to the skin will cause tissue death.
