A purple sandpiper (Calidris maritima) in nonbreeding plumage rests among a flock on the rock jetty next to the Ocean City Inlet, Ocean City, Maryland. Purple sandpipers are named for the purple gloss seen on the back feathers only at close range and have the northernmost winter range of any of the sandpipers.
