Lightbox Ecology { 18 images } Created 24 Sep 2020

Images of flowering plants photographed on a light box, many taken in and around Stone Barns Center For Agriculture and Rockefeller State Park Preserve. Most images highlight an ecological story, whether that story is the plants in bloom at a particular time and place, regenerative agricultural practices, or flowers produced through sustainable agriculture.

  • "Mid-June Buttermilk" - Everything flowering or in seed along the fields below Buttermilk Hill in Rockefeller State Park Preserve on a day in mid-June. These fields are managed through rotational livestock grazing, but are particularly designated for grassland bird and pollinator habitat.

  • "Coffeeweed" - An alternate common name for common chicory (Cichorium intybus) because the roots can be baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute. Chicory is a common, but beautiful roadside wildflower species, as it thrives in disturbed areas. It is also a great livestock forage and may be toxic to intestinal parasites, working as a natural dewormer. Chicory flowers are highly transient, lasting only a day or less during hot weather.
