Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Great Falls National Park, Virginia
JackInThePulpitFlower.tif
Close-up of Jack-in-the-Pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum) growing along the swamp trail at Great Falls National Park, Great Falls, Virginia. Classic example of a spadix and spathe flower structure. Insects are attracted to the smell and heat produced by the flower. Calcium oxalate crystals cause a burning sensation if the raw plant is handled or eaten.
